Health workers – including doctors, nurses, paramedics, and hospital and ambulance staff – tirelessly serve their communities. One benefit of their job is being able to salary package tax-free living expenses to reduce their taxable income and maximise disposable income each year.

ACT health sector salary packaging or “salary sacrifice” allows employees to use pre-tax dollars towards expenses like mortgage or rent repayment and living costs without incurring taxes as they do so.

Benefits

Australia’s health workers dedicate long hours each day, providing essential service to the community and deserve recognition for their efforts.

Working in the ACT state health sector offers many advantages, including salary packaging. Salary packaging allows employees to elect living expenses such as mortgage, rent, or credit card payments to be deducted pre-tax instead of after-tax wages – decreasing your taxable income and increasing disposable income yearly.

Employees at public hospitals, ambulance services, and not-for-profit health promotion charities may salary package items subject to Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) up to an annual limit.

Tax

Act Health Care employees may receive up to an estimated annual salary of $82,581, or $40 an hour, according to our average annual payscale; your yearly individual pay may differ based on job, department, location and education factors.

ACT health sector salary packaging or salary sacrifice is a way of using part of your pre-tax income to pay for items such as petrol, mobile phone and internet plans, gym membership fees and health and personal care expenses. Public hospitals, ambulance services and health promotion charities may use salary packaging arrangements to cover most benefits that would generally attract Fringe Benefits Tax up to an annual maximum value; similar arrangements are also available to employees of Public Benevolent Institutions and fringe benefits tax-exempt entities.

Eligibility

Health workers play an invaluable role in Australian society and often work long hours. But they also receive some great perks – like being eligible for a salary package of $9,010 for living expenses usually subject to Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT). This bonus is paid through existing State payroll systems and can be used towards mortgage or rent repayments, utility bills, phone and internet costs and groceries. Employees eligible for this perk include physicians, nurses, midwives and other frontline health workers such as technicians, assistants or support staff who provide care or clinical services such as doctors, nurses, midwives or support staff allied health professionals, technicians, assistants, or support staff members.

The ACT state government is dedicated to creating an environment that values diversity and is free from discrimination, such as race, age, sex, religion, national or ethnic origin, disability status, marital status or sexual orientation/gender identity. To achieve this objective, its agencies employ and promote people according to principles of equity and fairness.

Exclusions

ACT health sector salary packaging, or Salary Sacrifice, allows employees to have certain expenses deducted from their before-tax salary rather than after-tax salary, thus lowering overall taxes and increasing available funds for lifestyle costs. As per Australian Government legislation and Fringe Benefits Tax Exemptions, public health sector employees may have a salary package up to an amount that doesn’t attract FBT and does not exceed 80% of their gross salary (80% maximum per full and part-time staff); depending on individual situations, there may be other expenses suitable for salary packaging – depending on personal situations there may be additional expenses worthy of salary packaging depending on your situation.
